German EU Council Presidency proposes final draft conclusions on hydrogen to Member States

The German Presidency of the Council of the European Union has tabled new draft conclusions on the establishment of a European hydrogen market, inviting the Member States’ Ambassadors to the EU (Coreper) to approve this new version at their meeting on Wednesday, 9 December.

Last week, they left without having been able to validate the previous draft conclusions, due to a blockade by Spain, which wanted to put more emphasis on the importance of renewable hydrogen (see EUROPE 12616/13).

The new document proposed by Berlin thus makes some changes in the wording of the text, for example by underlining the “essential role” of hydrogen produced from renewable energy sources for the achievement of the decarbonation target. However, these changes remain minor.

At the time of going to press, the ambassadorial meeting was still underway.

It should also be noted that, on the other hand, the latter approved the draft conclusions on the promotion of European cooperation in the field of offshore and other renewable energies, thus paving the way for their final adoption by written procedure.
