EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT PLENARY / Turkey

European Parliament condemns Turkish actions in Varosha

26/11/2020 (Agence Europe)On Thursday 26 November, MEPs adopted a joint resolution by the GUE/NGL, Greens/EFA, S&D, ECR, Renew Europe and EPP groups condemning Turkey's illegal activities in Varosha (see EUROPE 12608/2) (631 votes in favour, 3 against and 59 abstentions). They support a solution to the division of Cyprus “on the basis of a bicommunal and bizonal federation with a single international legal personality, a single sovereignty and a single citizenship, as well as political equality between the two communities”. By adopting an amendment tabled by the EPP Group (440 votes in favour, 193 against and 59 abstentions), the European Parliament is no longer just asking the European Council to consider the possibility of imposing targeted sanctions, but to “take action and impose severe sanctions in response to Turkey's illegal actions”.
