The European Parliament deplores the ongoing armed conflict between the Federal Government of Ethiopia and the PFLT-led regional administration in Tigray. On Thursday, 26 November, its expressed its deep concern, notably about the ongoing violence and allegations of serious violations of fundamental human rights.
In a resolution adopted by an overwhelming majority (643 votes in favour, 5 against and 46 abstentions), it expresses its solidarity with the victims and their families and deplores the deaths and killings of innocent civilians and extrajudicial executions, whoever the perpetrators may be.
Parliament calls on both parties to commit to an immediate ceasefire and to resolve political differences by democratic means in order to find a lasting peaceful solution, to establish a ceasefire monitoring mechanism and to work towards a national consensus through inclusive dialogue.
Deploring the restricted humanitarian access, MEPs call on the Ethiopian government to grant humanitarian organisations immediate and free access to conflict areas and warn of the danger of a serious humanitarian crisis in the country as well as in neighbouring States and throughout the Horn of Africa.
