27/10/2020 (Agence Europe) – The European Parliament’s Committee on International Trade backed by an overwhelming majority (38 votes in favour, 1 against, 3 abstentions) on Tuesday 27 October the European Union’s agreement with China on the protection of geographical indications (see EUROPE 12532/17). This agreement will allow 100 European products with a geographical indication (cava, feta, Polska Wódka, prosciutto di Parma) to be protected against imitations and misuse of a product’s name. In exchange, 100 Chinese products will benefit from the same protection in the EU. Within 4 years, the agreement will be extended to include 175 new European and Chinese products. The Committee also calls on Beijing to show constructive cooperation in the ongoing negotiations on a bilateral investment agreement. (MB)
