27/10/2020 (Agence Europe) – Sixty-one MEPs from the EPP, S&D, ECR, Renew Europe and Greens/EFA groups from 19 Member States called on the Commission on Monday 26 October to stop all funding to the Belarusian authorities as long as repression in the country continues. In a letter to Olivér Várhelyi, Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, MEPs call for the principle of “less for less” to be applied to the authorities, “until all political prisoners are released, fundamental rights are respected and free and fair elections are held”. Conversely, they believe that the principle of “more for more” should be applied with Belarusian civil society. MEPs also want the Commission to be creative about the disbursement of funds, especially the €53 million announced in mid-August (see EUROPE 12544/9). (CG)
