15/10/2020 (Agence Europe) – The European Environmental Bureau (EEB) welcomes the Commission’s Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability as “a plan for the chemical clean up of Europe” that addresses citizens’ concerns (see EUROPE 12581/6). “We really welcome this strategy and its ‘zero pollution’ objective, because we are facing a serious and growing threat from an invisible enemy”, said Tatiana Santos. EEB welcomes the phase-out of the most toxic chemicals in consumer products; the phase-out of PFAS, “found in almost everyone's blood”, the considerable strengthening of chemical safety controls and zero tolerance for non-compliance; and faster action on endocrine disrupters of concern. Among the drawbacks: the absence of an absolute objective to reduce chemical production, the lack of attention to workers, and possibly dilatory impact studies. (AN)
