15/10/2020 (Agence Europe) – The GUE/NGL group announced on Wednesday 14 October the fatal shooting of Arnold Joaquín Morazán, a leader of the Guapinol community and finalist for the 2020 Sakharov Prize. “We demand justice for Joaquín and the leaders of Guapinol”, said Miguel Urbán Crespo of Spain. The group condemned this “heinous act” and called for a strong EU reaction to demand justice. He recalled that Honduras is one of the most dangerous countries for environmental and human rights defenders, many of whom are threatened, imprisoned and killed for defending their land and natural resources. On Twitter, Greens/EFA group MEP Tilly Metz (Luxembourg) also called for justice in this case. (CG)
