Commission harmonises 5.9 GHz band to facilitate deployment of intelligent transport

The European Commission is clearing the way for connected mobility. On Wednesday 7 October, it adopted an implementing decision harmonising the use of the 5.9 GHz electromagnetic spectrum band to facilitate the real-time exchange of information on safety conditions in intelligent transport systems (ITS), in particular as permitted by 5G.

These systems include trams, metros and suburban lines, which can exchange information with other vehicles and their environment.

The new implementing decision, which repeals the 2008 Implementing Decision, doubles the available spectrum for safety-related ITS. Moreover, the road-ITS and urban-rail-ITS are merged in one harmonised band thus “significantly increasing spectrum efficiency”, the Commission points out.

Pursuant to that Decision, Member States have until 30 June 2021 to allocate the spectrum band to those ITS. They will have to report to the Commission on the implementation of the Decision by 30 September 2022. The text provides for a review of the situation “ when market developments require an update or by 30 September 2023 at the latest”.
