EU lifts sanctions against Aguila Saleh and Nouri Abou Sahmein

02/10/2020 (Agence Europe)The EU officially lifted sanctions against Aguila Saleh and Nouri Abou Sahmein on Friday 2 October, following the political decision of EU Foreign Ministers on 21 September (see EUROPE 12564/2). While the two Libyans had been sanctioned in March 2016 for undermining the political process in the country (see EUROPE 11522/17), Mr Saleh sees his sanctions lifted because of his “recent constructive commitment to a negotiated political solution to the crisis”, according to the EU Council. Lifting the measures against Nouri Abu Sahmein was decided on the basis of “the general absence of any recent role in the Libyan political process”. Khalifa al-Ghweil remains subject to measures - an assets freeze and a visa ban - which have been extended until 2 April 2021. (CG)
