02/10/2020 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 2 October, the European Commission received confirmation from the organisers of the European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) ‘End the Cage Age’ (see EUROPE 12414/25), which calls for an end to the use of cages for farm animals. It has received the support of almost 1.4 million citizens. The Commission will meet the organisers to discuss the initiative in detail. A public hearing will then be organised in the European Parliament. The Commission will then decide on the next steps: to propose legislation, to take other non-legislative measures or not to act at all. This initiative is the sixth to have reached the threshold of one million signatures from at least seven Member States. (LC)
