11/09/2020 (Agence Europe) – The S&D group in the European Parliament has no doubts about the experience and probity of Mairead McGuinness, candidate EU commissioner for financial stability and financial services. But it wonders whether the Irish Christian Democrat is compatible with this portfolio, since the President of the Eurogroup and the Chief Economist of the ECB are of the same nationality. The Social Democrats also want to be convinced that Mrs McGuinness will fight for tax justice, whereas Dublin and the EPP group in Parliament, from which she comes, are not, in their view, models in this respect. “Some progressive MEPs have raised questions about her profile and her home country’s reputation on taxation and financial services”, said Spanish Jonás Fernández, S&D group coordinator for Parliament’s Economic and Financial Affairs Committee.
