01/09/2020 (Agence Europe) – Fifty-seven MEPs, led by Spanish S&D MEP Domènec Ruiz Devesa, are calling on the European Commission to respond to new allegations of Greek refoulement of migrants. In particular, they want explanations after the New York Times reported in mid-August that the Greek coastguard is sending migrants who have just arrived in Greece back to sea, towards Turkey. They want to know whether the Commission intends to open infringement proceedings against Athens, given the “systematic” nature of these accusations against Greece. The European Parliament Committee on Civil Liberties had already looked in July into alleged refoulements and violence at the Greek-Turkish border dating from the end of February. In August, the Commission reiterated that it did not have the means to investigate these allegations on the ground and that it relied on the Governments concerned to do so. (SP)
