Euro area annual inflation was -0.2% in August 2020, down from 0.4% in July, according to a flash estimate issued by the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) on Tuesday 1 September.
Looking at the main components of euro area inflation, food, alcohol and tobacco are expected to have the highest annual rate in August (1.7%, compared to 2.0% in July), followed by services (0.7%), industrial goods excluding energy (-0.1%) and energy (-7.8%).
Euro area unemployment at 7.9% in July
In July 2020, the euro area seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 7.9%, up from 7.7% in June, according to Eurostat.
The EU unemployment rate was 7.2%, up from 7.1% in June.
In July, 15.2 million men and women were unemployed in the EU, of whom 12.8 million were in the euro area. Compared with June 2020, the number of people unemployed increased by 336,000 in the EU and by 344,000 in the euro area.
In July, youth unemployment rate was 17.0% in the EU and 17.3% in the euro area. Compared with June, the number of unemployed people under the age of 25 increased by 37,000 in the EU and by 29,000 in the euro area. (Original version in French by Mathieu Bion)
