03/08/2020 (Agence Europe) – The United States is putting pressure on TikTok. After threatening to ban the Chinese app, U.S. President Donald Trump said he would give himself 45 days to act. This gives Microsoft until 15 September to continue its acquisition talks, including its branches in Canada, Australia and New Zealand. With a billion users worldwide, TikTok makes it possible to create, share and view short clips, usually musical, offbeat or humorous. But Donald Trump accuses the very popular platform of being used by Chinese intelligence for surveillance purposes. He declared, on 31 July, that he would ban the app and was even opposed to a takeover by an US group. Some consider that Mr Trump's intervention represents a negotiating tactic designed to force the Chinese group to sell the US activity to Microsoft at a lower price than expected. (SPj)
