The European Commissioner for Equality, Helena Dalli, announced via her Twitter account on Tuesday 28 July that the Commission had rejected the application of six projects to the EU twinning programme on the grounds that they involved Polish localities that had adopted resolutions of a discriminatory nature.
The Director of the European Commission’s Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) had written earlier this month to eight applicants asking for clarifications and ensuring their compliance with the principle of non-discrimination.
The eight candidate projects in question involved Polish localities that had, among other things, adopted resolutions on the subject of “zones free of LGBT ideology” (see EUROPE 12393/13).
However, the six excluded cities – one of which had not responded to the EACEA’s request – remain unknown as the Commission refused to disclose their names.
“The fundamental rights and values of the EU must be respected by Member States and public authorities”, Ms Dalli stressed in her tweet.
However, eight other projects led by Polish organisations or localities are among the projects selected for grants under this programme.
