Following collective resignation of editorial staff of premier news website, Commission promises to settle a 2016 complaint related to media pluralism

27/07/2020 (Agence Europe)The Commission has already expressed its support for media pluralism in the EU on numerous occasions and “will do its utmost to reach a solution” on a complaint already lodged in 2016 regarding State aid granted to Hungary’s main public audiovisual media. This was the reaction expressed on Monday 27 July by the institution’s spokesperson, Dana Spinant, to the almost collective resignation on 24 July of the editorial staff of the premier Hungarian news site ‘Index.hu’ after the dismissal of their editor-in-chief, which is considered to be political. The Commission recalled that it would assess media pluralism in its first annual report on the rule of law, due in September, and again welcomed the conclusions of the European Council of 21 July, which introduce a conditionality linked to the rule of law. “We are now working on putting them into practice”, the spokeswoman said.
