Rethink the EU democratic model to better reflect the role and responsibilities of regional and local authorities, manage new major societal transformations and foster cohesion to make it the “compass for all EU policies”.
These are the three main pillars that will structure the Committee of the Regions' political action from 2020 to 2025, according to a resolution adopted (193 votes in favour, 23 against, 8 abstentions) at the plenary session on Thursday 2 July.
In essence, the Committee wants to play a greater role in European policies and to ensure that the territorial component is better taken into account (particularly with a view to reducing administrative red tape).
The Committee wants to better guide European action to help local and regional authorities tackle the various major green, digital and demographic transitions in our societies, not forgetting the risk of pandemics.
Finally, the regional body wants to continue its fight to maintain cohesion policy as the compass of European action, particularly in view of the negotiations on the next Multiannual Financial Framework and the Recovery Plan, the latter of which should be more territorialised, depending on the region (see EUROPE 12518/4).
