25/05/2020 (Agence Europe) – The Hungarian government, after criticising the decision of the Court of Justice of the European Union on asylum-seekers’ camps at the border with Serbia (see EUROPE 12490/20), finally decided on 21 May to implement it and to release asylum-seekers held in so-called camps in the transit zones between Serbia and Hungary (see EUROPE 12487/23). According to local media reports, 300 detained asylum seekers have already been released. Prime Minister Gergely Gulyás’ chief of staff explained that “the transit zone was a solution that protected Hungary's borders and the unfortunate decision of the EU Court obliges Hungary to eliminate these zones”, the AFP reported. Detainees were to be transferred to reception centres. (SP)
