295,800 people were granted asylum in EU in 2019

In 2019, the European Union granted international protection to 295,800 asylum seekers, 27% of whom were Syrians, the statistical office of the EU (Eurostat) said in a press release on Monday 27 April.

This proportion is 6% lower than in 2018 (316,200 recognised cases). After the Syrians, Afghans (40,000 or 14%) and Venezuelans (37,500 or 13%) were the most successful in obtaining protection, with nearly a 40-fold increase in the number of Venezuelans in 2019 compared to 2018. Germany and Spain accepted the most asylum seekers from these three countries.

Last year, Member States also received more than 21,200 resettled refugees.

In 2019, among those granted protection in the EU, 141,100 were granted refugee status (48% of all positive decisions), 82,100 were granted subsidiary protection (28%) and 72,700 were granted protection on humanitarian grounds (25%).
