14/04/2020 (Agence Europe) – Several representatives of the Party of European Socialists (PES) and the S&D group in the European Parliament have, in turn, written to the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, calling on her to give more support to women, who are particularly affected by the health crisis (see EUROPE 12457/17). In their letter, dated Tuesday 14 April, they point out, inter alia, that women are over-represented in professions exposed to the virus and that an increase in domestic violence has been noted since the introduction of containment measures in several countries. They also propose a series of 18 measures to be put in place quickly. “We have the moral and political obligation not to forget about them while responding to the crisis and beyond”, said Maria Noichl (S&D, Germany), co-ordinator of the Committee on Women’s Rights.
