26/02/2020 (Agence Europe) – The NGO Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) urged Member State leaders on Wednesday 26 February to stand united in defending a strong and workable carbon offsetting and reduction regime for international aviation. Better known as CORSIA, this compensation system will be discussed starting next week at a meeting of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) in Montreal, Canada. According to Annie Petsonk, International Advisor to EDF, Member States must seize this opportunity and “press ICAO to deliver transparency, bar old dubious credits, and ensure each carbon credit is only counted once”. She added, “EU governments can use their collective diplomatic action to safeguard CORSIA’s integrity”. (DG)
