26/02/2020 (Agence Europe) – The spokesman for the European External Action Service denounced on Tuesday 25 February the sentencing by a Chinese court, the same day, of Gui Minhai to 10 years in prison. This Swedish publisher published and sold scandalous books about Chinese leaders. “There are serious questions to be answered about this case. His rights, including inter alia to consular access and due process, have not been respected”, the spokesman regretted. He called on the Chinese authorities to cooperate fully with their Swedish counterparts “in full transparency”, adding that the EU fully supported the Swedish government's efforts. According to the spokesman, the EU has in fact raised Gui Minhai’s case with the Chinese authorities on numerous occasions, both in private and publicly, including at the highest level (see EUROPE 11946/19). “And will continue to do so”, he stated.
