European environmentalists welcome closure of Fessenheim nuclear power plant

21/02/2020 (Agence Europe)The main leaders of environmental parties in the European Parliament, in France, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Germany, signed a communiqué on Friday 21 February welcoming the closure of the Fessenheim nuclear power plant in France, the first reactor of which is due to be shut down during the night of Friday to Saturday. “Energy efficiency, energy sobriety and the development of renewable energy sources are the only energy model capable of meeting the climate changes”, emphasised those who signed the communiqué. Giving assurances that they will continue to fight for the phase-out of nuclear power, they furthermore called for the “Fessenheim area” to become a “model of transition for the dismantling, but also for the redeployment of employees, their training and the creation of new jobs”. Having been in operation since 1977, Fessenheim is the oldest nuclear power plant in France. The shutdown of its second reactor is scheduled to take place on 30 June. On Friday some employees warned they would not proceed with the shutdown procedures. See the press release: http://bit.ly/38Pm9ZZ (DG)
