07/02/2020 (Agence Europe) – Cuban opposition leader Guillermo Fariñas, the winner of the 2010 Sakharov Prize, was released by the Cuban authorities on Thursday 6 February, but was ordered not to leave Cuban territory, even though he was preparing to attend a meeting of the European Parliament's Sub-committee on Human Rights (DROI). The sub-committee put strong pressure on the Cuban authorities to allow Fariñas to exercise his fundamental rights and travel to Europe. Sub-committee chair Marie Arena from Belgium said that the arrests of José Daniel Ferrer in October 2019 and the subsequent arrest of Mr Fariñas confirm “a worrying trend of increased repression against political dissidents”.
