Negotiations on the mandate of the European Parliament's future special committee on artificial intelligence could start at the 10-13 February plenary session in Strasbourg, EUROPE has learned. Two other special committees, namely the ones on cancer and on fake news, and a TAX sub-committee, are also confirmed.
According to our information, the various coordinators and vice-coordinators of the political groups are invited to give their opinion as soon as possible on the form that the future special committee on artificial and digital intelligence should take.
A priori, this body should be composed of 30 to 35 members and be set up for a period of 12 months. It should respect the division of competences and not encroach on the work of the standing committees already active on artificial intelligence, such as the committees on Legal Affairs, Industry, or Consumer Protection. It will in fact have no legislative power and will at most be able to adopt a non-legislative own-initiative report.
According to a draft mandate seen by EUROPE, its main task will be to examine in a coordinated manner the package of initiatives to be presented by the Commission on 19 February, namely: a strategy on Europe in the digital age, a data strategy and a consultation on artificial intelligence. It will also be able to analyse the impact of artificial and digital intelligence, inter alia, on skills, financial technologies, education, health, transport, agriculture, etc. (Original version in French by Sophie Petitjean and Pascal Hansens)
