'Three Wise Men' report to recommend maintaining suspension of Hungarian party Fidesz

23/01/2020 (Agence Europe)According to a number of media sources, including the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), which disclosed the news on 22 January, the report by the Three Wise Men of the European People's Party (EPP) is expected to decide to extend the suspension of the Hungarian party Fidesz. The report, which was commissioned last March by the EPP and drawn up by Herman van Rompuy, the former President of the European Council, Hans Gert Pöttering, the former President of the European Parliament, and Wolfgang Schüssel, the former Austrian Chancellor, is expected to say that the suspension should last until such time as Viktor Orbán provides reassurances about changes to Fidesz. It would appear that the report does not contain a proposal to exclude Orbán’s party. The suspension means that Orbán cannot take part in EPP party meetings. Fidesz MEPs in the EPP group will continue to take part in the group’s activities as normal. Donald Tusk, the EPP’s new president, is expected to give the party's decision in early February at the EPP's political assembly. (SP)
