14/11/2019 (Agence Europe) – Several NGOs, including Shark Advocates International, called on Thursday 14 November, for international action to protect mako sharks “facing extinction”. The International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) will consider, at its annual meeting to be held in Mallorca from 18 to 25 November, new scientific opinions of concern on the state of the mako shark stock. Scientists recommend that ICCAT prohibit fishermen from keeping the mako sharks they catch on board. “Neither the EU nor ICCAT have established fishing quotas for mako sharks. Yet the EU is the world's leading player in the landing of mako sharks, mainly by Spanish vessels”, says Shark Advocates International. (LC)
