30/10/2019 (Agence Europe) – The European Union will deploy an Election Observation Mission (EOM) to the Sri Lankan presidential elections on 16 November. This is the sixth European EOM deployed in Sri Lanka. The High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Federica Mogherini, expects this mission to contribute to an “inclusive, credible and transparent” election. “This election is important for Sri Lanka to continue making progress on its path of reform and national reconciliation”, she added. MEP Marisa Matias (GUE/NGL, Portugal) will lead this mission. The central team, composed of nine electoral analysts, arrived in Colombo on 5 October and will leave once the electoral process is completed. 30 long-term observers were also deployed in the country. 30 short-term observers will join them during election week.
