Opening of an investigation into Polish support for renovation of district heating networks

The European Commission decided on Friday 25 October to open an in-depth investigation to establish whether the projects to support the renovation of five district heating networks in south-eastern Poland comply with EU state aid rules.

At this stage, the Commission is concerned that the planned support may not meet the ‘efficient heating network’ criteria set out in the Energy Efficiency Directive. The aid in question seems to target “inefficient district heating systems supplied by...
