Inflation down to 0.8% in euro area in September

Euro area annual inflation was 0.8% in September, down from 1.0% in August, according to data published by the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) on Wednesday 16 October. At the European Union level, it stood at 1.2%, compared with 1.4% in August.

The lowest annual rates were observed in Cyprus (-0.5%), Portugal (-0.3%), as well as Greece, Spain and Italy (0.2%). The highest annual rates were recorded in Romania (3.5%), Slovakia (3.0%) and Hungary (2.9%). Inflation amounted to 1.1% in France, 0.9% in Germany and 0.2% in both Spain and Italy.

Compared with August, annual inflation fell in twenty Member States, remained stable in five and rose in two.

In September, the largest contributions to annual inflation in the euro area came from services (+0.66 percentage points, pp), followed by food, alcohol & tobacco (+0.29 pp), non-energy industrial goods (+0.06 pp) and energy (-0.18 pp). (Original version in French by Mathieu Bion)
