25/09/2019 (Agence Europe) – The European navigation programme Galileo experienced a "minor" bug on 2 September, confirmed the European Commission on Wednesday 25 September, following revelations of the French satirical newspaper Le Canard enchaîné. And for good reason. Galileo is still in the test phase and offers "initial services", before moving to the fully operational phase in 2020. In this context, regular updates of the system are carried out and can cause malfunctions, which would be common (about 400 per year), and corrected immediately without affecting the services, the Commission explains. This was not the case during the July incident (see EUROPE 12302/10), prompting the European Commission to react and communicate. Galileo continues its expansion and has recently surpassed the one billion smartphone users worldwide (see EUROPE 12323/6). (PH)
