The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called on Moldova to continue its reforms on Thursday 5 September.
Following a meeting with Moldovan President Igor Dodon in Brussels, Ms Mogherini recalled that she expected the Moldovan authorities to continue “coherent and collective work in implementing essential reforms, as tangible and continuous progress in this area is essential if the EU is to resume all its support”. The EU had suspended its macroeconomic assistance to Chișinău following the municipal elections. In particular, the High Representative stressed the need for progress in judicial reform, the fight against corruption and the depoliticisation of institutions.
Same message as NATO. “It is important that Moldova continue its democratic reforms, including the fight against corruption and the strengthening of the judicial system”, Mr Stoltenberg said at a press briefing with Mr Dodon. In his view, the country must remain committed to the values shared by all European democracies.
The Secretary General also recalled the Alliance's support in Chișinău, particularly in building strong institutions and good governance, as well as improving the country's expertise and defence against cyber attacks. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
