26/06/2019 (Agence Europe) – Eurojust and Europol announced on Tuesday 25 June that they had participated in the arrest by the British and Dutch national authorities of six people in a case involving the theft of cryptocurrencies for a total amount of €24 million. The theft, which targeted users' Bitcoin tokens, reportedly affected at least 4,000 people in 12 countries. The thieves allegedly used “typosquatting”, which consists of usurping – or recreating to imitate the original site – a cryptocurrency exchange to access the victims' Bitcoin wallets and steal their funds, as well as their login details. The investigation lasted 14 months and the case was referred to the European Cybercrime Centre and the Joint Cybercrime Action Taskforce, hosted by Europol, after the British authorities identified potential suspects living in the Netherlands.
