25/06/2019 (Agence Europe) – While the results of the 22 June presidential election in Mauritania were contested by the opposition, the EU called for calm on Monday 24 June. In a statement issued on Monday evening, the spokeswoman of the European External Action Service said: "The European Union welcomes the high turnout in these elections, which were held in a peaceful atmosphere and under generally satisfactory conditions". She added: "The European Union is concerned about the statements of some candidates. It calls for calm, restraint and recourse to legal channels for any disputes." Former general Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, a candidate for power, was elected in the first round with 52.01% of the vote, according to the National Independent Electoral Commission (Céni). The results of the election have yet to be validated by the Constitutional Court. (AN)
