27/05/2019 (Agence Europe) – The amendments to the Criminal Code adopted last week by the Polish Sejm and Senate “deprive certain categories of prisoners serving life sentences of the prospect of parole, and this measure is contrary to the case law of the European Court of Human Rights”, said Dunja Mijatović, Commissioner for Human Rights, on Monday 27 May in a letter to the Polish Senate President, Stanisław Karczewski. Regretting that the concerns she had expressed before the vote had not been taken into account, she invited her interlocutor to “organise a wider public debate in the Senate in order to carefully assess the impact of the legislation on human rights with a view to ensuring its compatibility with Council of Europe standards”.
