20/05/2019 (Agence Europe) – The EU called on Ukraine on Monday 20 May to "preserve the momentum of reforms and ensure their sustainability also in this election year", while the new President, Volodymyr Zelensky (see EUROPE 12240/11), on his inauguration, called for the dissolution of the Rada. According to an EU spokesman, further steps still needed to be taken to formalise the dissolution. "Free, fair and credible elections are one of the cornerstones of democracy, which underpins the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement", he also reminded EUROPE, adding that the EU looked forward to cooperating with the new President, the government and the Rada in the implementation of the agreement. Parliamentary elections were scheduled for the autumn, but could be brought forward. In his speech, attended by Commission Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič, Mr Zelensky made a ceasefire in Donbass a priority. (CG)
