European Ombudsman thinks ‘Barroso’ and ‘Selmayr’ cases have hurt EU’s image

09/05/2019 (Agence Europe)On Tuesday, 7 May, European Ombudsman Emily O’Reilly confided in the AFP, acknowledging that the “revolving door” of former European Commission President José Manuel Barroso at Goldman Sachs and the controversial appointment of Martin Selmayr as Secretary-General of the European Commission give “ammunition to the populists”. “There is a frustration that there isn’t a recognition (within the European Commission) of the links between poor behaviour on the one hand and allowing populists to unfairly criticise the EU on the other,” lamented Ms O'Reilly, who reiterated how both of these cases have been covered by the media at European and international level and have hurt the Union’s image. In her opinion, it is consequently difficult for the Commission to lecture Member States on ethics, given its own practices. (PH)
