26/04/2019 (Agence Europe) – The Commissioner of Justice Věra Jourová confirmed on Friday 26 April, at a press conference, that it would not be possible to terminate under Jean-Claude Juncker's mandate the Cooperation and Verification Mechanisms (CVMs) that have applied to Bulgaria and Romania since 2007. Romania raises renewed concerns, but opinion on the independence of the judiciary in Bulgaria is not good either, the Commissioner explained, noting that efforts are needed to make Bulgarian reforms more sustainable. “There will not be enough time” by the end of the mandate to be able to put an end to these mechanisms that monitor judicial reforms and the fight against corruption, she said. This is in spite of the fact that Mr Juncker still thought it would be possible at the beginning of the year to make a reality of this promise made back in 2014. (SP)
