EU will not give a blank cheque to US plan, warns Ms Mogherini

The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, warned on Wednesday 6 March that the EU would not give the Americans a blank cheque for their plan for the Middle East, which should soon be presented.

"We made clear there is not going to be any European support, including financial support, in a blank cheque," she explained during a debate on the EU and the Middle East, recalling that the objective was a two-state solution.

We are talking with our American friends on content, giving input on [the plan]. And warning that if the content does not contain elements that we know could make it acceptable at least as a basis for relevant actors in the region, starting from the two sides but not only, also the Arab League, Europeans, if it does not contain basic elements that can make it fly even with adjustments, it will be an act of domestic politics and nothing more, I am afraid”, she warned.

According to her, while "everybody knows more or less the parameters that would allow a solution to be found", at the moment there are neither "the political conditions nor the political will. Today the point we can have realistically on our agenda is to avoid that the two-state solution is dismantled for good and to keep that horizon in place and to build the conditions for getting to a political place where we can have that done", added Ms Mogherini. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
