25/02/2019 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission recalled on Monday 25 February that it had never proposed any migrant “camps” in third countries, particularly in North Africa. The Guardian reported on 24 February that the African Union (AU) was working on a declaration officially rejecting the system of regional platforms for disembarkation of migrants in third countries, as the idea had been raised in June at a European Summit. In the end, the declaration of the EU-Arab League Summit does not mention those platforms that this text of the 55 AU countries intended to challenge. The Commission reiterated that it had also not intended to bring back to these countries migrants rescued in European waters. This 'regional' dialogue with North African countries is ongoing through UNHCR and IOM. As for the discussions on 'platforms', they are continuing for intra-EU application. (SP)
