Eleven new programmes to tackle the root causes of irregular migration from the Horn of Africa to Europe and forced displacement in the region will be financed for a total of €134.4 million by the EU Emergency Trust Fund for Africa, the European Commission announced on Friday 14 December.
€65 million will go to six programmes to support UNHCR's Global Framework for Action for Refugees and €5 million to optimise the use of financial investigation and anti-money laundering tools to dismantle smuggling networks in the region.
The other main programs are as follows: - Djibouti: €8 million to integrate refugees into the country's social protection systems; - Kenya: €17.8 million to improve asylum management, empower refugees and host communities in Garissa County and support the economic development of the Kalobeyei site; - Sudan : €10 million for educational assistance to refugee children (mainly from South Sudan); - DRC: €3 million for South Sudanese refugees; - Uganda: €18 million to improve people's access to information, training and justice (including legal aid, advisory services and mobile courts); - Ethiopia and Uganda : €8.2 million for a pilot programme for the exchange of experiences and expertise at regional level on urban population mobility.
