France threatens to introduce its own national tax in case of failure on digital taxation at European level

06/12/2018 (Agence Europe)France will not hesitate to introduce its own national tax if it fails to tax digital giants at European level, French Minister Bruno Le Maire announced on France 2 on Thursday, December 6. On Tuesday, Paris and Berlin presented a very watered-down proposal for a digital services tax that would only apply to online advertising (see EUROPE 12152) in an attempt to save the project. “I am giving myself until March to get a European tax on the digital giants and I will not give up,” the minister said. However, "if the European states do not take responsibility", France will tax the digital giants as early as 2019, he continued. At least 13 Member States - recently Spain and the United Kingdom - have already taken or plan to take action. (MF)
