31/10/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 31 October, Europeans hailed the acquittal of Pakistani Christian Asia Bibi. "Asia Bibi is finally free!", European Parliament President Antonio Tajani stated, deeming that her "only crime" was her Christian faith. "The Pakistani authorities must now ensure her safety and that of her family", he urged (see EUROPE 12124). The EU's special representative for human rights, Stavros Lambrinidis, said he was very happy that Asia Bibi's death sentence for blasphemy had been annulled by the supreme court. He added that the EU had constantly called for her release. On 31 October, Pakistan's supreme court acquitted Asia Bibi on appeal. She had been sentenced to death for blasphemy in 2010. It also acquitted her of all accusations and demanded her immediate release. (CG)
