26/10/2018 (Agence Europe) – Asked at a press conference on the rise in discrimination against the Roma community on Friday 26 October, the European Commissioner for Justice, Věra Jourová, expressed her deep concern. "After the great wave [of discrimination] against migrants, the Roma people are coming back in first place.[...] We must stop this, while there is still time", she said. On the situation in Italy and the recent controversial remarks by European Parliament President Antonio Tajani, who said that the minimum income granted by the Italian State would end up "in the pockets of Roma, foreign citizens [...] and certainly not in the pockets of many Italian citizens", the Commissioner said that he had explained her intentions. But with 90% of the Roma population living in 11 EU countries, she acknowledged that the Commission was keeping an eye on some countries, including Italy. (MF)
