02/10/2018 (Agence Europe) – Asked about Udo Bullmann's (S&D, Germany) call for a pro-European front in the run up to the European elections (see EUROPE 12707), the leader of the GUE/NGL Group, German MEP Gabi Zimmer, said she was against any Manichaean approach pitting enemies of the EU against its friends. "It's a trap", she said at a press conference in Strasbourg on Tuesday 2 October, adding that among "the friends" of the EU, there were models that are totally opposed. Zimmer nevertheless said she was in favour of continuing "specific" cooperation after the European elections. "But this is what we are already doing in committee", she continued. Not all are of this opinion within the group. Greek MEP Dimitrios Papadimoulis recently launched a call for a "variable geometry" pro-European alliance to fight against far-right forces (see EUROPE 12095). (PH)
