21/09/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 20 September, a delegation from the European Parliament’s civil liberties committee called on the Maltese government to speed up its investigation into the murder of journalist Daphné Caruana Galizia in October 2017 (see EUROPE 11885). After a two-day official visit to the country, the MEPs say they were unable to assess tangible progress in the investigation due to the confidentiality of information. The MEPs also call for the posthumous libels trial against the journalist to be withdrawn and for the Maltese justice minister to unambiguously condemn the hate campaigns against her family. The MEPs remain strongly concerned by the number of scandals that have hit the island, like the sale of ‘golden visas,’ money-laundering and the involvement of members of the government in corruption cases.
