21/09/2018 (Agence Europe) – CAN Europe (Climate Action Network) applied on 20 September to the European General Court to intervene in the People’s Climate Case - a case in which families and youth have challenged the EU in order to protect their fundamental rights from the insufficiency of the EU's 2030 greenhouse gas emissions reduction target (see EUROPE 12026). This coalition representing over 1.700 NGOs and more than 40 million citizens aims to present its arguments to shore up the need for a stronger 2030 objective for the EU in order to comply with the Paris Climate Agreement objective of global warming of an average of 1.5° C on the pre-industrial level. CAN Europe will rely on the IPCC’s report expected to be unveiled on 8 October, which will alert the world to the harmful impact of current warming and how this impacts will get far worse if we do not limit the temperature rise to 1.5°C, and the need for rapid but feasible decarbonisation across all sectors.
