Commission expresses concern at spread of African swine fever in Romania

On Thursday 6 September, the European Commission expressed concern at the growing number of cases of African swine fever in Romania.

Developments on the ground are of concern to us, with many cases in pig farms and in wild boar near to the border with Ukraine and Moldova, a Commission spokesperson said.

Since the summer, there has been a record number of cases of African swine fever in Romania, with the epidemic having also hit parts of Lithuania, Latvia and Poland.

The Commission reiterates that exceptional measures have had to be taken and called upon Romania correctly to apply European law and to allocate adequate human resources to implement the rules.

Implementing decision 2014/709/EU of the Commission establishes animal health control measures to tackle African swine fever in member states in which confirmed cases of the disease have been observed.

The Commission stresses that financial support has been granted to Romania to help it to contain the spread of the disease: €1.2 million, including €760,000 in 2018. EU expert teams have been on the ground since July to help local authorities to implement the surveillance measures. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
