29/08/2018 (Agence Europe) – The European Parliament's liberal group is of the opinion that the leader of Burma/Myanmar, Aung San Suu Kyi, should be stripped of the Sakharov Prize that was awarded to her in 1990 (and which she received personally in 2013 - see EUROPE 10948) when she opposed the military regime. The reason for the ALDE Group's opinion is the lack of response from the current head of the Burmese government to the tragedy of the Rohingya Muslims. "Four years after Aung San Suu Kyi received the Sakharov Prize, Myanmar committed genocide against the Rohingya minority. The European Parliament should withdraw the Sakharov prize from the leader of Myanmar to send a clear message that these horrible crimes will not go without punishment", Urmas Paet (ALDE, Estonia) stated in a press release. In his view, the Burmese military involved should be taken to the International Criminal Court, in line with a recent UN report (see EUROPE 12082). (MB)
