02/08/2018 (Agence Europe) – In a press release published on Tuesday 31 July, the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) discussed the analysis made by certain media sources claiming that climate change could be the single cause of fires and floods that have affected Europe over the past few weeks. The data produced by C3S could have been misused by the media in an attempt to “try and make sense of the current weather situation”. The C3S service points out that it “is in the initial stages of setting up a pilot scheme…scheduled to begin in 2019”. The press release indicates that there are therefore a multitude of causes for these phenomena and that the fires, for example, could also have been caused by the quantity of dry foliage, the overall humidity of the soil, wind speeds or even different social behaviour (such as throwing cigarette ends on the ground).
